The Safety Print - Safety Rise
Five (5) Ws of Safety Explanation
The Five Ws of Safety are Who, What, Where, When, and Why, a fundamental framework used in incident investigation, emergency response, and risk assessment to gather comprehensive details about any safety event, ensuring all critical aspects (people involved, the incident itself, location, time, and root cause) are understood for prevention and resolution👉Who:-
1. Employees: Ensure all employees are aware of potential hazards and take responsibility for their safety.
2. Contractors: Verify contractors have necessary safety training and follow site-specific safety procedures.
3. Visitors: Inform visitors of potential hazards and provide necessary personal protective equipment (PPE).
Who (Who is involved?)
Who all are involved in this activity?
Example: Workers, supervisor, safety officer, contractor, operator.
1. Hazards: Identify potential hazards, such as chemical spills, falls, or electrical shocks.
2. Equipment: Regularly inspect and maintain equipment to prevent malfunctions.
3. Materials: Handle materials safely, following proper lifting techniques and storage procedures.
What (What is the work / hazard?)
What type of work is being carried out, or what hazard / incident is involved?
Example: Working at height, hot work, electrical work, lifting activity, etc.
👉When:-
1. Before starting work: Conduct safety briefings and ensure employees understand tasks and potential hazards.
2. During work: Monitor work activities and address any safety concerns.
3. After work: Review tasks completed and identify areas for improvement.
When (When is the work planned?)
When will the work be carried out (date, time, shift)?
Example: Day shift / night shift, specific date and time
👉Where:-
1. Worksite: Ensure the worksite is clean, organized, and free from hazards.
2. High-risk areas: Identify areas with higher risk, such as confined spaces or areas with hazardous materials.
3. Emergency escape routes: Ensure all employees know emergency escape routes and assembly points.
Where (Where is the work being done?)
Where is the work being carried out?
Example: Specific site area, height location, confined space, plant area.
👉Why:-
1. Prevent injuries and illnesses: Safety measures help prevent workplace accidents and reduce the risk of injuries and illnesses.
2. Reduce costs: Implementing safety measures can reduce costs associated with workplace accidents, such as medical expenses and lost productivity.
3. Improve morale and productivity: A safe work environment boosts employee morale and productivity, leading to improved overall performance.
Why (Why is it risky?)
Why is this work or situation hazardous?
Example: Risk of fall from height, electric shock, fire hazard, injury, or fatality.
By considering these 5 Ws of Safety, you can create a safer work environment and reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.
