Implementation of an effective EHS system is ensured only when the prepared Safety plan, procedures and policies are properly communicated through down-the-line induction, training and awareness programs, appropriate communication, monitoring and supervision.
Psychology of the employees here plays a huge role as they are both the receptors of the information and the implementers as well.
Why is Psychology such a big thing in the field of EHS ?
It is just a simple and basic notion : One will only do something in a disciplined manner if they have their heart and mind in it. And that will be reflected in their positive attitude. So, for EHS, implementation is not possible without a positive behavioral approach towards achieving the EHS targets.
This 'Behavioral Approach' can be based upon the psychology (or the science behind the mind and behaviour) of the people involved in the execution of the targets.
How would you know if an employee is in a negative state of mind ?
- Lack of Motivation for implementing Safety Drives and carrying out daily tasks
- Resistance and Grievance against Management's Decision Making
- Not willing to contribute and/or share new ideas for achieving EHS Goals
- Show some support to them in front of the team
- Respect your employee
- Appreciate your employees/Recognize their efforts
- Connect/ Keep a check on their situations
- Ask them about their ideas
- Back them up when they are trying to put forward a point
- Motivate them
- Cover up negative feedbacks with positive ones
- Adequate compensation
- Develop them and Care about their progress
So, for a good Safety Culture, it is important to make sure that your workforce has a positive frame of mind !
