HSE : IQA : Fall Protection


  1. When do we require fall protection?
    • Each person who could fall from 1.8m shall be protected from falling by fall protection.
  2. What are the four methods of fall protection?
    • All elimination.
    • Fall prevention (Guardrail system, Net system, Self-retractable lifeline).
    • Personal fall arrest system (Full body harness).
    • Administrative controls (Signage, training, safety monitoring system, warning line etc).
  3. What is Guardrail system?
    • Barriers erected to prevent workers from fall to lower level.
  4. What are three main parts of Guardrail system?
    • Top rail, mid rail and toe board and guardrail system must be capable of supporting 200 lbs (91 kg).
  5. What is Anchorage point?
    • A secure point of attachment for lifeline, lanyard or deceleration devices (Self retractable lifeline) and should be capable of safely supporting 5000 lbs (2268 kg) per person attached.
  6. What is life line and 2 types of lifeline?
    • Lifeline works as an extension to anchorage system which allow workers to move up and down (vertical lifeline) back and forward (horizontal lifeline) across the area.
    • Two types of lifeline are vertical lifeline and horizontal lifeline.
  7. What is PFAS?
    • PFAS means Personal Fall Arrest System is a system used to safely stop a worker who is falling from a working level.
    • It consists of anchorage, connectors, full body harness, lanyard, deceleration device, lifeline etc.
  8. What is Connector?
    • A device which is used to connect parts of the fall arrest system such as carabineer.
  9. What is safety monitoring system?
    • A system in which a competent personal is deployed to recognize and warn workers against fall hazards.
  10. When do we need full body harness and what should be the minimum breaking strength of full body harness.?
    • While working at or above 6 feet from ground level and full body harness should safely support 5000 lbs (2268 kg). Full body harness should comply to ANSI Z 359.1
  11. What is Passive Fall Protection and Active Fall Protection?
    • Passive fall protection means a system that is non dynamic, stationary, adapt or change when in or out and prevent personal from fall.
    • Such as Guardrail system, handrail, net system, fabrication system. 
    • Active fall protection means a system that is dynamic, need adjustment and activation participation.
    • Active fall protection consists of 2 parts.
    • Both system is used to secure personal to an anchorage point with lanyard.
    • Fall restrain system: Fall restraint system help a worker to prevent fall. Such as using automatic self-retractable lifeline.
    • Fall restraint system is preferred over fall arrest system.
    • Fall arrest system: Fall arrest system protect the personnel after they fall. It is used to stop the fall before the personnel hit the surface (ground).
