HSE : IQA : Ladders


  1. Explain the three types of Ladders?
    • Straight ladder including portable and fixed ladder.
    • Extension ladder
    • Step ladder (A frame ladder).
  2. Describe the safe use of ladders?
    • Ladders shall be maintained free of oil, grease and other slipping hazards.
    • Ladders shall be used only for the purpose which they are designed for.
    • When ascending or descending, face the ladder always.
    • Defective ladders like broken or missing rungs, cleats, broken steps, corroded components or other faulty components shall not be used.
    • Ladders shall be inspected by competent personal for visible defects that could affect their safe use.
    • The area around top and bottom of ladder shall be kept clear.
    • Ladders shall not be used beyond maximum intended load for which they were designed.
  3. Tell me about safe use of step ladder?
    • Step ladder shall be free of grease, oil or other slippery hazards.
    • Don't use the top or top step of step ladder as a step.
    • Do not use defective step ladder.
    • Face the ladder while ascending or descending.
    • A metal spreader or locking device shall be used to hold the front and back section in an open position when the ladder is being used. Step ladder shall be gripped by 1 worker while being used by another.
    • Maintain the top and bottom free of any obstruction.
    • Keep the step ladder close to work.
    • Do not use step ladder horizontally like a platform.
    • Do not use metal step ladder near power line or electrical equipment.
  4. Safety rules when using ladders?
    • The foot wear is not greasy, oily and muddy and has a good grip on the rungs.
    • When climbing or coming down a ladder should be face the ladder side and had on with both hand.
    • Carry light tools in pockets in a shoulder bag.
    • Hold on with at least new hand if use of both hands then, use safety belt
    • Never climb higher than the third rung from the top on straight or second tired from the top on extension ladder.
    • Step ladder must be fully open and the divider locked
    • Metal ladder shall not be used near electrical equipments.
    • Metal ladder shall not be place on firm footing and at angle of 75
    • Any ladder found defect in any way should be marked do not use
    • Ladder shall not be placed on a box or drum.
    • Rubber protection on head and heel of a ladder is necessary.
  5. What should be the minimum distance between two rungs?
    • Not less than 10 inch and more than 14 inches.
  6. What is 4 to 1 rule of ladder?
    • 4 to 1 rules mean that if a ladder is 12 feet off the ground, the base needs to be 3 feet from the wall. Ladder shall be set at 75 degrees.
  7. What is the 3 point of contact rule for ladder?
    • 3 point of contact rules means that when climbing up or down, 2 hands and 1 foot or 2 feet and 1 hand shall always be on ladder.
  8. Do you think 1 kg of load is allowed to carry in hand while climbing up or down the ladder?
    • No, 3-point contact cannot be maintained while carrying load.
  9. How long shall the portable ladder extend from landing surface?
    • Portable ladder shall extend 3 feet from landing surface.
  10. Can we use aluminum ladders near power line or electrical equipment?
    • No, non-conductive ladders shall be used like wooden or fiberglass.
