HSE : IQA : Lifting




  1. What is Lifting?
    • Shifting of materials manually or through machines are called lifting.
  2. How many kg of load is allowed to lift manually?
    • 23 kg.
  3. What is the safe procedure to lift a load manually?
    • Good grip over load.
    • Straight back.
    • Use your legs' muscles.
    • Arms close to the body.
  4. What is Lifting tools and tackles/ Lifting accessories/ Lifting gears?
    • Lifting tool and tackles are slings, belts, shackles, turn buckles, come along, spreader beam etc. 
  5. What are the common types of Sling/ Belts?
    • Synthetic web slings.
    • Wire rope slings.
    • Mesh slings.
    • Chain slings.

  6. Who will inspect lifting gears?
    • Certified rigger.
  7. What shall be used if the load is sharp and can damage sling?
    • Softener.
  8. What is Tagline?
    • Tagline means a rope (usually fiber) attached to a lifted load to control the load swing and irregular movement.
  9. What is called safety hook?
    • A hook with a latch to prevent slings or load from accidental slip off the hook.
    • Hook with safety latch are also called gated hook.
  10. What are the 3 main hitch types of sling?
    • Bridle hitch also called vertical hitch.
    • Basket hitch.
    • Choker hitch.
  11. What is Critical lifting?
    1. Note: It is an important topic, see your client procedure which is being followed.
    2. Different clients have different standards.
  12. What is Tailing lifting?
    • Lifting in which load is brought from horizontal position to vertical or vertical position to horizontal where two or more than two cranes are involved (like vessel, storage tanks etc).
  13. What is Tandem lifting?
    • Lifting in which 2 or more than 2 cranes are involved to lift a load.
  14. What is Blind lifting?
    • Lifting process in which rigger is not in direct vision of operator.
    • (Radio or other means of communication or multi riggers can be used in this condition).
  15. What are lifting hazards?
    • Unstable surface. (Crane can topple over).
    • Overloading. (Crane may collapse).
    • Using defective lifting gears.  (Load may collapse).
    • Working near power line. (Crane may come in contact with power line if safe distance is not maintained).
    • Heavy wind or bad weather. (Accident may happen due to heavy wind).
    • Uncertified operator and rigger.
    • Mechanical failure.
    • Fall of load.
  16. What is the procedure/requirements of lifting?
    • Ensure:
      • Permit to work is obtained.
      • Crane operator and rigger is certified.
      • Crane is inspected and valid third party inspection sticker is there.
      • Ground is level and stable.
      • Lifting gears are inspected and without damage.
      • Area is barricaded and signage posted (Keep away, lifting in progress).
      • Outrigger is fully extended and outriggers mat used.
      • Load is not beyond the rated capacity of crane.
      • Stop all lifting operations at 32km/h.
      • Restrict the unauthorized entry.
      • Tagline is used for all load except when create hazards (like may trap in scaffolding, Power line etc.).
      • Safe distance is maintained from Power line.
      • Load shall not be passed over workers.
