- How is chemical harmful to our body?
- Different chemicals have different properties. Some are corrosive, irritants and toxic while others are mutagenic, carcinogenic etc.
- Chemical can be in different form such as solid, liquid, gas, mist, fumes vapors etc.
- What are hazardous chemicals?
- Hazardous chemicals are the substances that can cause adverse effects such as poisoning, breathing problems, skin irritation, allergic issues, cancer or any other health problem when exposed to.
- How do chemicals enter into our body?
- There are four routes by which chemical may enter the body.
- Inhalation (By breathing).
- Ingestion (By swallowing or eating).
- Absorption (By skin absorption)
- Injection.
- What is PEL or TWA?
- Permissible Exposure Limit or Time Weighted Average is the maximum concentration of gases, vapors or any other hazardous substances in which a body can work for 8 hours 5 days a week without any adverse effects on his health. For instance, PEL of H2S is less than 10 PPM.
- What is STEL?
- STEL means Short Term Exposure Limit, the maximum concentration of hazardous gases, vapors or any other hazardous substances which do not create any bad effects on workers' health when exposed to short term period(15 minutes). STEL of H2S is 15 PPM.
- What is MSDS?
- Material Safety Data Sheet or safety data sheet are the documents provided by manufacturer which gives information about the specific chemical, substances or any product.
- MSDS Shows the identification, composition, hazards, first aid measures, firefighting measures, Safe handling and storage, PPE, physical and chemical properties, Stability and reactivity, Toxicological and ecological information and process for disposal of any chemical, substance or product or other required information.
- For how long eye should be flushed with water when exposed to chemicals?
- Keep flushing at least 15 minutes or unless help arrives.
- What are emergency equipment needed where hazardous chemicals are handled?
- Emergency equipment depends on chemical being used. Emergency equipment like fire extinguisher, spill kit, eye wash, safety shower, first aid kit etc are needed commonly.
- Tell me something about chemical safety?
- All chemicals shall be used according to MSDS specification.
- Use proper PPE while handling hazardous chemicals.
- Ensure Proper ventilation is in place.
- Ensure Emergency equipment like fire extinguisher, emergency eye wash or other requirements are fulfilled.
- Avoid eating, drinking or smoking in area when chemicals are handled.
- Make separate chemicals shelter to store chemicals.
- Precautions shall be taken to prevent ingestion, injections, absorption and inhalation of hazardous chemicals.
- Ensure chemicals are being transported safely.
- Chemicals should be stored in well ventilated area.
- Proper housekeeping need to be maintained where chemicals are stored or handled.
